now what?

So, I've finished my clinical training, I've mailed off the forms to the state and the testing company so I can take the certification exam next month, and I've filled out a form at my local hospital indicating that I want to volunteer there as soon and as much as possible. Now I guess I just have to wait for things to happen.

I'm scouring the newspaper and various websites looking for jobs to apply for. The frustrating thing is that they all want 6 months of experience. Oh well. Someone will have to hire me eventually, right?

I know of an available position at a spam company...

Congrats on finishing your CNA! You are going to be so much better off with that behind you. Some of my fellow students have never given anyone a bath before and some have trouble touching people. I am comfortable with some of the ugly work, because I recognize its importance. The thing I struggle with is lifting people, but our hospital has some great new equipment for that.

Does the spam company need some butts wiped? Because I am an expert at that now.

TDN, you are so right! Just having had the experience of touching people in a caregiving way increases my confidence dramatically. Also, I already know I like it, even when it's gross.

Is there any chance you could get hired by the place where you did your clinical training?

Most likely not... I did fill out an application there, but the director of nursing told me that the turnover in staff is so low that it's very unlikely that she'll have an opening anytime soon, and even less likely that she'd hire someone without any professional experience. Which was honest, but frustrating!

Good luck with everything! The exam is a breeze, I'm sure you'll do great! From one semi-professional butt wiper to another! :)

even now that you're going to be working as a CNA - Once you get into nursing school I'd suggest doing some volunteering in the hospital you'd like to work in (in the unit you think you'd enjoy most - not just general volunteering) This will give you a really really good perspective on how things work in that unit. You'll get to meet people who you may be working with in the future, and once you feel comfortable working in a nursing home as a CNA, well, by that time the hospital will probably tap you to come work for them while you're in nurisng school. The hospital I work at was so happy to have a nursing student working for them and expressing interest in working for them after I graduated, that they made me an awesome schedule that worked around my school days! :)
